Some Thoughts on Crystals

Crystals have been companions to man in one way or another since the beginning of time. For those of you that recognize the pre-history of Lemuria and Atlantis, it is common knowledge that these peoples were using quartz and other gemstones for energy sources, communications, data storage, and weaponry. Ancient priestesses painted their faces with white gypsum for purification and to emulate the goddesses of light they served. Most ancient cultures used gems for healing. According to the Bible, the twelve tribes of Israel were each represented by twelve corresponding precious stones. Nobility of all cultures encrusted their palaces and sacred places with precious gems. In Asian cultures, crystals were passed through generations as well as placed during burial with deceased love ones, a practice that still survives today.

In our modern age, the power of crystals cannot be denied. Computers, telecommunications, data storage, memory chips, etc. depend mainly on silicon dioxide, aka - quartz crystal. Rubies and sapphires make laser technology possible, and the building industry depends heavily on minerals such as gypsum, also known as a form of selenite. The military relies on beryllium extracted from such gems as “tiffany stone” for making missiles and warheads, and the drug lithium is still extracted to some degree from quartz with lithium deposits.

On a metaphysical level, crystals are finally beginning to get the mainstream recognition they deserve for supplementing our physical, emotional and spiritual health. I mention them as a supplement since we alone hold the ability to completely heal ourselves at the time of our choosing. Crystals are wonderful tools to assist us in these processes. It is also interesting to note that although we often refer to gemstones as crystals, everything of physical matter in our dimension has a crystalline structure at its simplest form, even man made items such as plastics, so definitely a concept to keep in mind when we consider the idea of “clearing” and “programming” crystals later in this discussion.

Even the precious gemstones that are not as popular in the metaphysical circles have their affinities. For example, diamonds are reputed to draw abundance to their wearer, along with consistency, fidelity, confidence, and purity. Diamonds are one of the gems said to improve physical vision. Emeralds are considered to be quite helpful at facilitating healing in the physical body, and rubies, the stone of nobility, assist in spiritual wisdom, strengthening businesses, imparting good physical health, and knowledge. Garnets are one of the original stones of commitment on all levels, life purpose, relationships, and self (found on many antique engagement rings) thought to strengthen the heart, lungs, and blood. It is worthy to note that these attributes are considered by many metaphysical crystal practitioners to be exactly the same whether a precious gem is natural or man-made.

At a time when many are finally comfortable displaying their cherished crystal specimens to all, it is a good idea to do a little research as to where in the home a gem would be most comfortable and able to impart its gifts. Stones such as selenite, celestite, (geode form), and kyanite (there are certainly others) do not do well in a damp environment and will discolor if not break apart from too much moisture.

Amethyst, celestite, and rose quartz may fade if placed in an area with too much UV lighting. A front door can benefit from the display of red tiger’s eye, (sometimes called dragons’ eye) a manifesting stone that will also chase away negativity. Hallways are thought to benefit from any sparkly or bright colored gems such as sulphur or hematite. Bedrooms can be given a cozy, feminine charm with the addition of rich, dark colored stones, (especially when in spherical or egg forms) such as lapis lazuli, hematite and obsidian, the latter two having grounding affinities.

Amethyst placed under the foot (never at the head…too energizing!) of the bed is believed to bring harmony to married relationships, or draw a love to a single person. Moss agate beside the bed is thought to ward off nightmares, amber makes waking in the morning more bearable, and certainly the addition of angelic stones such as celestite or angelite couldn’t hurt. These are just a tiny sampling of the possibilities of placing gems within the home.

There are a good number of gemstones making their way onto the scene that perhaps are not as popular, but are truly worth researching. Rhodocrosite, for example, is considered to be the “yang” version of rose quartz. It is often referred to as the stone of compassion in action, a beautiful term for such a lovely gem also attributed to drawing positive soul mates to us, and our inner child out.

Rhodocrosite exhibits a broad range of pink colors from opaque with gray undertones to a gel pink in its gem grade forms. Larimar is a recently rediscovered stone (1974?) that brings calm and clarity to its wearer and boasts a striking range of blue-greens and whites reminiscent of Caribbean waves. This is appropriate given that it is only found in the Dominican Republic, and has long been called “dolphin stone” or Atlantis stone”. Larimar is the gem foretold to be discovered at an appropriate time to “Atlantis’ rising” by the late Edgar Cayce.

On the subject of the abundance of gems making their way into the world markets at a fast pace, this must be a time when these treasures are ready to surface. Everything certainly happens in divine timing, and although they may have been brought to the surface, they are still happily here on the Earth to assist us and bring us their great beauty. Gemstones such as kyanite, which were previously only available as rough pieces for home display or carrying in a pouch, are now available in bead and pendant form, a wonderful way to combine healing with fashion.

When choosing a gemstone, it is important to “go with your gut” and let your intuition guide your selection. Make sure the stone “feels right” to you. Consider the things you are trying to draw into or out of your life, and start researching the crystal realm. You will be able to get to the point where you could look at a gemstone on E-Bay and know it is calling to you. Many believe, and with good reason, that just as all other inhabitants of the natural world are considered to have, that crystals have a resident “Deva” within that gives each gem its unique personality. Some say they can actually hear the little beings singing or talking. Perhaps this is an aspect of what we are drawn to in choosing a stone? Whatever the case, no two gemstones are alike, and everyone will be guided to the best one for their needs.

There is a good bit of discussion on “clearing” crystals, and this is certainly something to consider, even if the only gems you own are on your wedding band or heirloom jewelry. It is believed that gemstones pick up and absorb negative vibrations. Perhaps this is one of the ways in which they help us. I have personally observed some of my clear quartz crystals becoming cloudy over time, then more transparent after I use a technique to clear them. One of the most common, and damaging ways to clear a crystal has been to bury it in sea salt or soak it in salt water. Many still consider this the best way to clear a crystal of unwanted energies, but it is certainly at the expense of the crystal. Salt dehydrates the stones and can make them susceptible to breakage and losing luster, not to mention how this may affect the healing properties of the stone. There are many other ways to clear a crystal that are healthier to them. An additional note on salt is that it is a known absorber of negative energies, so if the salt itself is not cleared, just imagine what could end up in the stone additional. I’ll place an asterisk * next to techniques that can also be used to clear salt.

Forming an intention of clearing anything is just as important as the actual clearing, the clearing methods themselves being once again a facilitating factor. One simple way to clear crystals involves the use of sage or incense for smudging*. You simply form the intention in your mind that you are clearing any negative or non-useful energies from your stone as you wave the smoke around it. It is helpful to follow sage smudging with an incense of your choice (frankincense is good) since sage effectively removes so much that the energy needs to be refilled (this comes from a Native American so I trust it). You can also bury the crystal in dried herbs such as rose petals or sage and leave it for a day or so. Burying in the ground or in a flowerpot is yet another option but the crystal may get some mud deposits on it. Again, a day or so, trusting your intuition on this, will suffice. Leaving the crystals in full moonlight is considered another effective method of clearing. Sunlight is good*, but it depends on the sunlight and the crystal, since as mentioned earlier, some stones fade in UV light and faults within the gem may cause the piece to crack if the sun is too intense.

There are crystals that are considered to never need clearing, and have the ability to clear other gems placed on or near them. Selenite, kyanite, and citrine* are three of these. In fact, a kindly merchant at a gem show showed me a technique of standing in a triangle formed of selenite rods...it was an amazing sensation of clearing on my energetic and physical body! Running a stone under water (no extreme temperatures) is a quick clearing method, and then there is just the old standby of trusting your own power and sending your energetic affirmations through your crystal* to clear it squeaky clean.

If you are using your crystals for healing, remember to also set an intention for each crystal that will act as a program, as crystals, especially quartz, are amazing storehouses for data and energy. Enjoy!

Everything

Everything, every breath, every moment waking or sleeping is all about the healing journey. Which is nothing less than our journey back to our divinity. A journey toward our power and authority. Or you can toss it in the trash. Take your pick. The choice and the tools to get you there are already within you. You lack nothing you need for your journey. You were given a talent, a special gift that only you have. You were made on purpose and for a reason by none other than God. If He didn’t want you to use that unique gift, He would have given it to someone else. But He gave it to you for your healing and to assist others in their healing. Hopefully you choose to heal and return to God. But if you are like most people, you resist your divine nature. You resist God’s call. To some extent we all resist our gifts and talents calling them frivolously, a quirk of the imagination or a dream that won’t pay the rent.

In other words, we don’t really trust that we will be upheld and supported. We don’t trust God, our guides or even in our own ability. We retreat deep within and hide. We shut ourselves up in a prison so cleverly designed, that the truth couldn’t find us with a hundred sticks of dynamite. But find us it will! If not now, then perhaps we will be more willing the next time around. You cannot escape the truth, only put it off for a while.

What does this have to do with Spirit Art? Everything. Because—everything is healing, if you choose it to be. Spirit led art then becomes an act of healing on every level. Mind, body and soul—it’s a journey to your hidden depths and those hidden depths lead you directly to God. Since you can’t go to God without surrender, healing is nothing more than the simple and profound act of surrender. You knew I was coming to that didn’t you? That dreaded “s” word. Even considering the act of surrender dredges up dark and desperate images. That’s what healing is though, surrendering to a power and partnership greater than you can be on your own. Yes, partnership with God. Partnership with your guides and with the energies that fill the very air we breathe. Surrendering means accepting your God given abilities to change your own life, to heal, to draw, write a play, cook a great meal, design a dress, to teach…to do anything you were wired to be. Yes, I did say wired. Just like the electric in your house, you are hard wired in a certain pattern. Hard wired for a particular thing or set of things.

You know that there is something you do that just amazes other people. They just can’t get over how you do it. They are mystified by your ability to…whatever. What seems so easy and simple to you is impossible for others. There it is. Your passion. Your area of talent/gifts that only you can bring to the celebration called life—staring you right in the face—just daring you to create something amazing.

To me Spirit Art encompasses so much more than painting energy portraits or drawing angels and guides. It’s the very soul of creativity. When Spirit guides and inspires everything you do, then every act is creative. Every thought a possible new future. Just as in birthing a child, the new life was partially made by you and partially made by another and wholly (holy) filled by God. God or Spirit breathed life into the new creation and a new being was formed. Manifesting a new life is a very co-creative process. Like wise Spirit art is a co-creative process between your guides or angelic partners and you. Of course you have input into everything you do—it’s your creative talents they’re using. They supply the vision, your ability to see into their world and put to paper or canvas what you see. Master artist seem to even supply you with knowledge or skills that you never had but that suddenly appear and you are able to do so much more. Or if you allow, they can work directly with you guiding your hand as it dances across the paper.

In my case, my photo collages are created on the computer and being a person who prefers to experiment rather then crack open a manual, Spirit works with me trying different effects until it’s just right. I absolutely never remember how the collage got that way. That part is very frustrating but the results can be stunning as anyone who has ever visited my web site can attest to. Sometimes they do let me remember and a whole theme emerges. I know for certain, I could not produce anything as lovely and thought provoking without their help. Spirit and I work together as a team to produce not just pretty pictures. My writing is always inspired and sometimes channeled as well.

This journey into surrender and allowing yourself to be inspired is so very personal and discoveries I have made about myself have been astounding and frankly I have gotten to know myself much better. Unless you are doing energy portraits or similar work, it’s almost always about you and what’s going on in your head or deep in your subconscious. Of course other people benefit too, you’re not the only one to have that particular issue. When others see your work, it touches something deep inside and they are forever changed. Everything you see or hear changes you in some way and becomes, if you allow it, the sacred act of healing.

Can you set aside your personality/ego for a bit? Can you close your eyes and ask a master artist to work with you? Can you let your intuition be guided by a greater power? This process can seem scary especially for the control freaks among us. I have seen artist channel before and some of them get down right silly in their rituals and the way they “perform” for an audience. Being a no frills kind of person, I like to cut through the theatrics and get right to business. I don’t like wasting my time, or Spirits with an elaborate set up. Of course the process is unique for each person as is the healing journey and at the same time the process is exactly the same. Yes, it is a paradox, but true nonetheless.

We say a protective prayer and sincerely open our hearts and minds to the divine presence, the ascended masters, our guides, angels…whatever speaks to our heart. We ask for assistant in creating something beautiful. For a new way of thinking about a problem or a new attitude. We ask the masters to work through us. While they are working through us, they are also working in us. The side effect of all that energy flowing through us is a new balance, a healing. Perhaps fast, perhaps slow. But it will happen. Spirit will never give you more than you can handle. Whether it’s healing, joy, success or pain, spirit knows your limits. Never will your life be heaped so high with problems that you cannot over come them. Spirit knows just how strong you really are even if you don’t. Spirit only wants to see how you handle your problems. The choices you make define Spirit’s next step. Do you raise yourself up by your choice or do you allow yourself to fall. Your prize or level of healing and evolution depends solely on your choice of allowing Spirit to heal you or not. If you choose to allow Spirit to work through you, then you have surrendered to the hard wiring in your soul and effortlessly created something of amazing beauty. Now take that a step further and surrender everything else. Your life will become an amazing creation of love, healing and peace and you will have chosen to be a great blessing to everyone.

All well and good you say, but what does this have to do with Spirit art? Again the answer is—everything. Life is a highly creative process and the most successful are also the most surrendered. Another paradox? Not this time. The most successful people are the most aggressive and driven. They could not have created an empire without Spirits help. They listen to their intuition (inner guidance/spirit guides) and trust themselves above all others. They know without a doubt, if only subconsciously, that they are well connected to the energy of life, to spirit and they have something of great value to offer humanity. So guided by inner wisdom, they create a magnificent world for themselves and others. They allow Spirit to guide them and create through them, a magnificent world. Actually, there is no separation, they are united and in harmony with their divine nature.

Can you imagine what you can create if you consciously connected with your guides? So you don’t want to build an empire, you only want to make dinner. Fine, cook with inner guidance. Cook with your spirit guides. If you haven’t seen the move “Like Water For Chocolate” I suggest you rent it this very weekend. No, it doesn’t have a happy ending but it is a study in creating something of incredible beauty with all your heart and soul. The heroin put every ounce of love she had into each meal she prepared creating a feast of love and joy for all those who ate at her table. Inner wisdom guided her to make superb choices for ingredients. It was her gift; her art form and she used it well.

By allowing yourself to surrender to your inner guidance, your spirit guides, to God…whatever you choose to call it, you call forth your creativity—your unique gift. Your choice of how you use your gift will decide how much more you will receive. Use it or lose it as the old saying goes. Use your gift to heal and you gain not just healing, but more talent and more power to call forth even more. More of what?

Massage Isn't Just for People!

Who doesn’t love a good massage? When you hear the word "massage", guaranteed your animal companion isn’t the first one that comes to mind. You probably picture yourself at an expensive spa, spending lots of money, living the life of luxury and receiving the "feel-good" benefits after a good massage!

Just as holistic medicine is not yet formally recognized by the medical community as a viable treatment adjunct, the benefits of alternative medicine are not being fully recognized by the veterinary community either. Slowly however, things are beginning to change for both people and animals in this regard.
Thankfully today as a society and as caregivers we are discovering the value of preventive holistic healthcare for us and our animal companions by recognizing the importance of working with the mind, body and spirit together. Massage is a natural contribution to a fit, happy and healthy life for you and your animal companion. Animals of all ages benefit from a good massage. You do not need to wait until an animal is in pain or discomfort to benefit from a good massage. It is a great addition to preventive health care for your pet.

For many of us it is no longer considered a luxury for our animal companions to benefit from a whole host of holistic alternatives like massage, acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy or homeopathy.
There are many benefits to animal massage. All of the benefits are the same benefits we as humans experience such as, an increased overall sense of wellness, a general sense of calming and reduction of stress, increased flexibility and movement, pain reduction or relief of pain. Decreased recovery time from surgery or trauma, increased circulation of the blood, lymphatic and nervous systems, removal of toxins from the body and its organs are also of the potential benefits of massage.

During their lifetimes almost all animal companions will experience some bumps, bruises, injuries, or serious trauma. Sometimes, however, after such injuries are treated and healed by a veterinarian, your animal companion may continue to experience some painful residual effects. This is a good example of when massage can be used to compliment the veterinary care being given.

As a certified canine massage therapist it brings me joy to see the relaxation, peacefulness and sometimes playfulness an animal exhibits after receiving a massage. Often times I have had dogs fall off to sleep as I work on them. Others however become energized by having tight muscles or joints loosened.

Each animal is different and each responds differently to a massage. Old age happens to the best of us and our animal companions get there sooner than we do. Massage can help alleviate the pain older animals have with arthritis or stiff joints. There are many natural approaches to help relieve pain including nutritional supplements, acupuncture as well as massage.

Not just for muscles anymore, therapeutic massage therapy can also effectively and naturally help alleviate many physiological problems an animal might be experiencing. The act of touch alone can often times produce emotional healing or a sense of wellbeing for an animal companion.
Despite the many positive aspects of massage, there are some situations in which it may not be an appropriate treatment. Animals suffering from fever, shock, infection, open wounds, rashes, lumps and immune disease typically do not benefit from massage and taking the time to perform a massage will delay much needed veterinary care.

All throughout history, massage has been used routinely on animals as part of healing and conditioning programs, to help increase the aid in recovery from injury, to provide relief from soreness and pain and to calm and relax our animal companions who lived and worked alongside us. In the areas of racing or showing of animals, massage is often times used on a daily basis to keep the animal healthy and relaxed.

Alternative holistic health care provides animals with additional resources for overall good health and a happy life.
